See you then!
The Rainmakers’ free outdoor gig at Johnson County Community College August 27 is still on. We too are concerned with the Covid outbreak raging across our state now, but on balance decided we should go ahead and play the gig. Here’s a statement on the subject from Bob Walkenhorst on Facebook:
“We are going ahead with plans for our Aug 27 concert at Johnson County Community College. There will be LOTS of space for social distancing. We will not be selling merch or coming out after the show. If you are NOT VACCINATED – PLEASE DO NOT ATTEND – WE DO NOT WANT YOU THERE. Call us names, boycott us, burn our records – we don’t care – we are sick of this. It’s your turn to stay home. For those of you who are vaccinated and have done all you can to bring this to an end – let’s do this!”
Sadly, the COVID-19 pandemic has taken a huge toll on the entire live music industry. We were supposed to play this upcoming weekend, with a bar gig in Springfield and an outdoor show at Johnson County Community College. Unfortunately, those gigs and our usual late fall lineup (Thanksgiving weekend, etc.) have been canceled–which is a good thing, given the risk.
We look forward to the day when it will be safe to share in the communal good feeling of live performance. We miss playing and we miss you. Until then, please be safe–wear a mask, keep your distance, wash your hands. And let the people around you know how much you care about them.
Saturday, August 24, the Rainmakers will play a festival in Bonner Springs, Kansas. This is a chance to see us in a family-friendly atmosphere, one that probably slips under the radar for most Kansas City-area music announcements. Come on out! Details can be found on the event’s Facebook page. We play at 9:30, with two other bands preceding us.
This is shaping up to be quite a fun event! On Friday, July 26, at 6 pm there will be a literary discussion between Bob and two of Norway’s leading authors, Levi Henrikson and Lars Mytting, as they discuss how Bob’s lyrics have influenced their writing.
At 8:00, Finn Bjelke will host one of his extremely popular (and hilarious) music trivia contests, called Popquiz.
And finally, at 10 pm, the band will play an acoustic set. Read all about it at The Final Gig website. And be sure to buy a ticket— you don’t want to miss this one!
This July 27, the Rainmakers will play our final band gig in Norway at the beautiful Langfjæren Arena near Mosvik, Nord-Trondelag. Details, including tickets and accommodations, can be found at TheFinalGig.com. Click on “English” in the navigation menu to see the site in English.
We are looking forward to seeing our friends in Norway one more time, and a concert in this natural amphitheater in a beautiful fjord is the perfect cap to a long and wonderful love affair between the band and this amazing country. Here are a few pics from our show in 2014, by Sven-Erik Knoff at FotoKnoff. We hope to see you there!
The Rainmakers at Inderøyfestival
Sadly, the Norwegian Wood music festival, where the Rainmakers were to perform on June 16, has been canceled. Not only were we looking forward to performing at the festival, it had been running for a couple decades and was a high point every year for Norwegian music fans. We hope the festival returns in 2019, and of course we’d like to be part of it!
Here’s the official statement about the cancellation on the Norwegian Wood website. The statement is in Norwegian. There is an automatically-translated version here, on their Facebook page.
We are really excited to get to play the prestigious Norwegian Wood music festival in Oslo this coming June 16! The headliner that evening is Jo Nesbø’s band Di Derre. The night before features Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit and Swedish rocker Thåström. The festival takes place in beautiful Frogner Park in the heart of Oslo, and has been running since 1992. Come on out and see us!
We’ve just gotten confirmation on our gigs for the New Year’s weekend. On Saturday, December 30, we will play the New Year’s Eve Eve party at Knucklehead’s with Chris Meck and the Guilty Birds. On Sunday, New Year’s Eve, we will play a private party in Liberty, like last year. More info to come.
